Albuquerque, NM | March 20 & 21, 2024

On March 20-21, 2024, Albuquerque hosted a convening focused on rural infrastructure challenges and opportunities in New Mexico. Sponsored by the Milken Institute’s 10,000 Communities Initiative and organized with the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP), the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC), and the Office of the Governor, the event brought together community leaders, government officials, philanthropists, and investors to explore infrastructure projects that can drive economic prosperity in underserved rural communities.

Participants identified key investment areas, including broadband, clean energy, water systems, and regional coordination, while addressing workforce development, community engagement, and innovative financing.

“This convening allowed us to tackle systemic barriers and develop a comprehensive strategy for resilient and equitable infrastructure in New Mexico,” said Olga Morales Pate, CEO of RCAP.

The meeting underscored the significant investment needed—billions of dollars—to upgrade rural infrastructure and emphasized the potential for private investment and public-private partnerships. Workforce development and community involvement were also highlighted as essential components.

Looking ahead, organizers plan to reconvene participants to develop action plans and foster ongoing collaboration.

“This is just the beginning of an effort to transform rural infrastructure in New Mexico,” said Morales Pate. “By working together, we can build the infrastructure system our communities deserve.”
